Supporting Narrative
This competencies states that I demonstrate the disposition for lifelong learning and continuous professional development. At Franklin College, they instilled in us the drive to become lifelong learners. That drive is what led me to Purdue University. Thankfully my place of employment, Indian Creek Intermediate School, also pushes the teachers to explore new methods of teaching as well as try these methods in the classroom. While I could easily give proof of professional development from several workshops required by my principal, I have decided to include two artifacts that were not required and purely a choice.
I chose to pursue my Google Educator certification in 2016. This certification requires you to take a test to demonstrate two things. You must know the best practices on how to adapt Google products for education specifically, as well as being able to use the tool correctly over several provided challenges within the test. This was a self-made goal and I have obtained my Google Educator Certification in levels one and two. I have a personal goal to keep this certification current as Google products for education are constantly evolving. Another professional development journey that I decided to embark on was taking Central Indiana Educational Services Center’s (CIESC) Technology Leadership Certification course. I first took this course in 2013 as encouraged by my building principal. This course covers everything from proper pedagogy, professional learning opportunities within social media, open educational resources, digital citizenship and digital copyright. My superintendent later invited them to give the same certification course in our district for easier access for our educators. I ended up completing this course two more years in a row. This results in taking the course 3 times and earning my certification again each time. I have included the certificate from my latest certification. A future goal I have set for myself is to engage with educators outside of Indiana. My first step will be attending the ISTE conference in Chicago this summer.
I have also included an artifact from my coursework at Purdue. In this artifact, I found examples of where I met requirements within several case studies that were asked of me by EDCI 67200 “Advanced Practices in Learning Systems Designs” course. I engaged in reflection and tried to develop my abilities. In my reflection, I identified my strengths and weaknesses in several areas such as problem finding and problem solving. In this activity, I realized that the only way to develop my expertise is to continue to look for opportunities to keep practicing. This is still a goal I have.
