Supporting Narrative
The competency states that I can identify and analyze learning and performance problems. I have included two of my case studies from EDCI 67200: Advanced Design. I grew a lot in this class and was made aware of real limitations instructional designers may face in the real world. In the Jack Watercamp case, I discuss how he should attempt to manage his project better. He has issues with time demands, development issues and with team members. There were many moving pieces in this case study and it was a challenge to create the best scenario for Jack to move on with his project.
The competency states that I can design, plan and develop instructional interventions using appropriate strategies and techniques. In my paper prototype for EDCI56900: Introduction to E-Learning, I created a PowerPoint that was based on “Hamilton: An American Musical” and it’s references to the American Revolution. This has been my favorite project completed at Purdue University. I used the ADDIE process as well as made sure to include a period of content delivery, practice time as well as an assessment. I am very pleased with how this project came out and I am confident that I created a completely online, student-driven module that immerses the learner in the content using various pieces of media such as infographics, videos, music and pictures. I even presented the content to a group of third graders informally and they were very excited about Alexander Hamilton once they were done. They were not the target audience, but I believe if third graders could be drawn into a middle school level module, then it will be equally as attractive and interesting to an entire middle school class who can wrap their mind around the content easier.
The competency states that I can develop an evaluation for a project based on stated goals and recognized standards. The artifact that I used for this competency was an evaluation project completed with a classmate. Within our evaluation plan we had two levels: Reaction and Learning. We created a reasonable Gantt chart to keep track of timelines. We examined a training be offered about Google Docs. These were available on the site Lynda.com. This was a thorough evaluation on a topic and gave me a great insight on how I can progress within evaluating online learning websites for my teachers in the future.
A goal for myself would be to make sure that I keep evaluating any module or instruction after they take place. So often I am used to evaluating informally, however, as I move into a more instructional design career, evaluating my work will be very important to progress, succeed and learn from any mistakes.
