Supporting Narrative
The first sub competency states that I can describe common research methods in educational technology. In both artifacts that I have included for this competency, I had to do extensive research about theories and trends in educational technology. I focused on the Constructivist viewpoint for professional development. Making sure that the teachers have the knowledge and resources that they need for their classrooms is one of the most important things we can do for our educators. The paper for EDCI 531: Learning Theories of Instructional Design, demonstrates my ability to research the best methods of preparing teachers for the technology powered classroom. Creating knowledge for teachers and focusing on the best methods to transfer that knowledge is vital. In the EDCI 513: Foundations of Learning Design and Technology paper, I also talk about how we need to prepare our teachers to treat technology as a culture instead of just a tool. Supporting well experienced teacher can be a very difficult task, and preparing them for the advance of technologies in many classrooms can be very daunting. In this paper, I had to research popular trends to explain this idea. Professional development, social media and of course academic journals are the best ways to stay up on new research in the field of educational technology.
The second sub-competency suggests that I can read and evaluate educational technology research. Both papers required an intense amount of research including research on the constructivist approach as well as researching educational technology trends. These artifacts prove that I met the competencies by demonstrating my ability to find the best sources to support the topics brought forward within the paper. When describing how technology needs to be a culture, I had to find quality research to support or transform my preliminary thoughts. Due to my persistence, I came away with a strong paper that confidently defends itself using quality and academic research.
The third sub-competency states that I can find the solution to common problems in educational technology. The main points in both of my papers are to take problems or occurrences in education and finding problems. I met the competencies clearly when offering my solutions to the issues presented in the papers. Teacher attitudes being negative toward technology is only one of the modern-day issues I present in my artifacts. I understand the recognizing problems are not enough, so I gave my solutions within these artifacts making them perfect examples of how I have met this competency.
At this point in my career, I have discovered that finding solutions to problems is something I can easily do with some time and opportunity to research. However, I can still grow in my ability to find initial problems. Problem finding expertise can grow with exposure to opportunities to combat issues within proper settings. Case studies would be an excellent way to enhance my problem-solving skills. In a more practical approach, better analyzing problems that arise in my own work place would help me develop this skill even more than a general case study.
